Several
teams enjoy success as season nears end
by Alan Woods
MSP chairman
It’s
finals time again for the premiers who have a 2.30pm semi-final this Sunday
against Avalon at the stadium.
All the best to Luke and the team as they go for three in a row, something
the club has never achieved. See you all there.
It is ironic that, as winter arrives, club rugby is already over for some.
Our premier two side had their last game on Saturday and finished with
a good win over Norths.
It has been another successful season for the team as they went unbeaten
in winning the Harper Lock Shield, scoring 376 points and conceding just
90. They picked up a bonus point for four tries in nine of their 11 matches.
Congratulations to coaches John Bishop and John Bell, and captain Aaron
Davies and the team who have represented the club with distinction.
The 80/80 Blues, having won the first round, continue on their unbeaten
run and are now looking for the double.
The Senior 4 Whites are only a couple of points clear of the Reds at the
top of the table for the Paul Donoghue Trophy, for which they are the
defending champions; good luck to both teams.
Subs headache
On a less positive note, it is disappointing to have to raise the fact
that many players have chosen not to pay their subs.
The hours that have been put in this year chasing teams and individuals
has been the low point for the club’s management, and has been at the
cost of more positive initiatives such as providing playing and training
gear and equipment.
The club does not exist solely for the benefit of individuals - apart
from the vital contribution subs make to running the club, subs represent
one’s identification with MSP.
The lessons learnt this year will not be repeated, and I would like to
see players who have not paid their subs ineligible to take the field
for MSP. This is an early warning, which I intend to follow up next season.
Gym Foundation
Enclosed is a brochure inviting you to join the Gym Refurbishment Foundation.
Some have already contributed, and I thank them for their generosity.
Everyone agrees the new gym is a great asset for the club, offering modern
facilities for players to reach their goals.
The foundation is a practical way of demonstrating your support for the
next generation of “Red Machine” and St Pats College players, and I invite
you to complete the form and return it to the treasurer.
My thanks to Jeff O’Sullivan for his assistance with the Foundation project.
Another Shamrock
Club success
The Shamrock Club’s
pre-Test dinner on 13 June, a highlight of MSP’s social calender, was
another outstanding success. The 286 people who attended were entertained
by speakers Colin Meads and Ian Jones.

The evening would not have run as smoothly without members of the
colts helping out, although what coaches Mouse Jensen and John Spillane
(front right) were doing is anybody’s guess. |

Club
tens tournament organised for August
A club
tens tournament kicks off on 9 August, and players who want to take part
can contact club captain Mike Sood.
With the regular club season due to end early, MSP plans to enter at least
two teams made up of players who don’t make rep teams.
One team will be an open-grade side, and the other a colts-80/80 side.
More teams may be entered if there is enough player interest.
The tournament will take place on 9, 23, and 30 August, and the format
will be finalised once the WRFU confirms the entries.
Contact: Mike Sood, ph 025 668 8287 or 478 7126 (h).
St
Pats 1st XV bounces back
The St
Pats Town 1st XV is back on track with six wins from its last seven games,
says coach Mike Woods.
The wins included a 10-5 victory over visiting Sydney school GPS Knox
Grammar, a team with four NSW schoolboy reps. St Pats had lost to Knox
when the team went on a tour to Australia in Easter.
Mike says the St Pats’ team is made up of young players who were new to
first fifteen rugby. Several narrow losses early in the season proved
costly, and although they lost their place in the premier one college
grade, the team is now playing well and leads premier two.
No 8 Faifile Levave has been selected to captain the Wellington secondary
schools side, and lock Margus Slade has made the development team.
There are good signs for next year, says Mike, with the St Pats under-15
open team doing well and the entire first fifteen backline due to return
to school in 2004.
AROUND
THE TRAPS
Wellington reps
Congratulations to the following MSP premiers who were selected to play
for the Wellington Lions against Hawkes Bay in July: Luke Mahoney, Kristian
Ormsby, Jamie Parkinson and Matt Egan.
Club colours
Good to see Hurricanes board member Paul Collins wearing an MSP scarf
at the recent MSP v Norths game.
TV stars
The MSP premiers featured on Sky’s Grassroots TV programme when
the game against Poneke was shown on 3 July, but several former MSP players
also shone when a club match in Nelson was shown in an earlier programme.
The match was refereed by Bernie McLaughlin, who played alongside current
club members Mike Jensen and John Bell.
Bernie has also refereed at NPC level. Playing in the game was former
premier flanker Craig Simeon, son of Paul and Diane, and brother of current
premier 2 player Mark.
Craig has been playing rep rugby for Marlborough, and both he and Bernie
have ended up in Nelson through their jobs with BNZ.
Sky’s commentator was former All Black Ian Jones, the guest speaker at
the MSP test dinner.
Swings and roundabouts
Although the premiers will lose Kristian Ormsby to the NZ Maori team for
the semi-final against Avalon, the team will welcome back Samoan internationals
Kas Lealamanua, Fa’atonu Fili, and Dominic Feaunati.
