Premiers overcome strong challenge from Wainuiomata

Our Premiers met their biggest test of the season to date against last season's Jubilee Cup finalists Wainuiomata at Evans Bay Park.

In a first half that never reached great heights due to simple errors from both sides, it was the boot of stand-in first five Andrew Wells that kept the Red Machine in front at the break for oranges. Earlier in the half Wainui fullback Fa'atau Mamea was the man to cross the line after some sustained pressure.

The second half continued as an arm-wrestle between the sides with it looking like the team that could string the most phases together would walk away with the win. MSP was the team to do this midway through the half as replacement No. 8 Peniasi Tokakece barging over with his first touch of the ball - an in his 50th match for Marist St Pats!

Despite continued attacks from Wainui through the remaining 20 minutes, that one try proved enough to walk away with the win.

Premiers next play HOBM at Hutt Rec on ANZAC Day at 2.30pm...
