Premiers loss to HOB Marist could be costly
The premiers dropped out of the Jubilee Cup top four after a 16-25 loss to Hutt Old Boys Marist on 24 July and will have to rely on other games going their way next week if they are to make the Cup semi-finals.
In a mixed display, the team combined some sharp attacking play with lapses in defence and poor discipline. The ground at the Hutt Rec was heavy but on a sunny afternoon both teams tried to play some enterprising rugby. Hutt were first on the board with a converted try after 15 minutes, but MSP hit back with some good ball movement leading to a well-taken try by fullback Apoua Stewart. The move was sparked by first-five Fa'atonu Fili backing up after a rep game for the Wellington Lions the previous evening. Apoua, hooker Ged Robinson and centre Taj Mailata had also been on rep duty. Fa'atonu added a penalty and HOB Marist matched that right on halftime so the teams were tied up 10-10 at the break.
HOB Marist scored two minutes into the second half from a quick lineout move, but two Fa'atonu penalties closed it up to 17-16. The home side finished more strongly, going on to score a converted try then a penalty in the last act of the game to deny MSP a bonus point.
With a lot of club rugby cancelled after several days heavy rain, only the club's top three teams played, and all suffered defeats. In the Hardham Cup the premier 2s lost 9-32 to Hutt's B team, while the previously unbeaten senior 2s were hammered 8-45 by second-placed Upper Hutt.

Lost opportunities costly against Norths
The premiers failed to capitalise on a number of scoring opportunities and went down 3-20 to Norths in the mud and rain at Evans Bay Park on 17 July.
The home team battled hard to gain territory but couldn't put any points on the board apart from a solitary penalty to first-five Ryan Setefano. Three times in the first half MSP hammered away at the Norths line but a combination of their own mistakes and some solid Norths defence kept them at bay.
In the second half, the players virtually unrecognisable in the mud, they had a golden opportunity to score after Norths were reduced to 13 men with two players yellow carded. A storming run by flanker Sio Tuia took MSP to their opponents' line but again they failed to score vital points.
The dangerous Norths backs scored one try in the first half, and another good try second-half try in the trying conditions. Right on full-time they scored from a tap penalty to collect a comfortable win, but MSP will rue some ill-discipline and poor option taking.
In the Hardham Cup, the premier 2s ground out a good win over Norths' seconds, while the senior 2s are outright leaders of the grade following an 18-12 victory over second-placed Wellington. See the full list of MSP results>>

Defence the key in win over Petone
The premiers grabbed a vital four points in their Jubilee Cup campaign with a nail-biting 24-19 win over Petone at Evans Bay Park on 10 July.
The side showed a lot of character to hold out a strongly-finishing Petone team that camped inside the MSP 22-metre line for the last 10 minutes, but the result was a fair reflection of a tough forward battle in which MSP had the edge for much of the game.
First-five Fa'atonu Fili was the scoring star for the home team, collecting all the side's points. In fhe first half, he landed four penalties and a dropped goal to give MSP a 15-6 lead at the break. With little wind and the sun trying to shine through after a terrible week's weather, he nailed some fine shots on a heavy field, missing only one that hit the crossbar. The other feature of the first half was some outstanding defence, with captain and lock Nick Passi, hooker Ged Robinson back from injury, and young loosies Valentine Meachen and Solomona Sakalia to the fore.
Petone came storming out in the second half, opening up the MSP line on several occasions. Fifteen minutes in, they scored the only try of the match from a scrum near the MSP line to close it up to 18-16. However, two more Fa'atonu penalties enabled MSP to keep their noses in front to the final whistle. The win can be put down to committed defence, the team having the best defensive record in the competition.
Meanwhile, in the Hardham Cup, the premier 2s were unlucky to concede a converted try on full-time against Johnsonville's top side, and had to settle for a 24-all draw. The senior 2s are topping their second-round competition after their fourth straight win.

Last-gasp loss to Poneke on 3 July
The premiers committed one of rugby's cardinal sins by failing to put away their opponents and went down to a last-gasp 21-23 loss to neighbours Poneke on 3 July.
With a 21-6 lead 35 minutes into the second half, MSP looked to have the game in the bag on a sunny but heavy Kilbirnie Park. Obviously some in the team thought that too, because suddenly Poneke rattled on two converted tries and then a penalty, in the last act of the game, to steal a miraculous win.
In a superb game of club rugby before a big crowd, MSP had a fine first half with a light breeze at their backs. It was a big match for two players, fullback Apoua Stewart in his 100th game, and centre Chris Slade in his last appearance before a shift to Melbourne. The pair were in top form, with Chris making a sharp midfield break to put Apoua in at the corner for the first try, and minutes later he went in next to the posts after slicing through off a short ball from Fa'atonu Fili.
A Fa'atonu penalty had MSP up 21-6 at the break and it stayed that way for most of the second half. Both sides put on some outstanding defence as play switched from end to end.
The decisive moment came 10 minutes from time with the sinbinning of captain Nick Passi for offside play. Poneke then pounced, leaving the MSP supporters dumbfounded and the Poneke supporters jubilant.

Premiers battle to win over OBU
The premiers battled atrocious conditions and a committed Old Boys University side before coming out on top 16-3 on 26 June. Southerly gales saw many games cancelled in the capital and at Evans Bay Park, a bitter wind cut across the ground already cut up by the premier 2s' early game.
In the main game, OBU had the better of the opened stages but centre Chris Slade opened the scoring with a penalty after 10 minutes. The game quickly became a forward battle and the MSP pack made good ground through using the pick and go. A strong OBU defensive line held up for 30 minutes until halfback Peter Sciascia flicked a ball back inside for hooker Liu Taituave to dive over a pile of muddy players and score.
Some excellent play just before halftime saw MSP again hammering away at the OBU line, and quick hands from a ruck put winger JP Tocker sliding over in the corner to give the home team a 13-0 lead at the break.
In the second half the mud-caked players became unrecognisable in the gloom but play still swung from end to end as the teams tried to play rugby. A penalty to either side was the sole scoring in the second half, which was notable for former MSP captain and prop Kas Lealamanua coming off the reserves bench late in the match.
No 8 Wim Baars and Liu Taituave had strong games in the forwards, but the player-of-the-day award went to Peter Sciascia who showed considerable skill in the freezing conditions.
In the early game the premier 2s went down 12-5 to Tawa in their Hardham Cup clash, but it was a good showing from the seconds against another club's top team. See results for other MSP scores...

Bright start to Jubilee Cup round
The premiers made a bright start to their defence of the Jubilee Cup with a 49-0 win over Upper Hutt in the first game of the Cup round on 19 June. On a grey day at Evans Bay, a young forward pack missing several established players turned on an energetic display to shut out the visitors.
In the Hardham Cup, the premier 2s also made a solid start. Although they lost 12-13 to Wainui's top side, with a little luck and a goal kicker they could have won in a match that suggests they will take a few scalps in the weeks ahead.
In the main game, first-five Fa'atonu Fili was the first try scorer after darting around the blindside of a ruck close to the Upper Hutt line. He then added a long-range penalty before a barnstorming run from second-five Joe Wright set up a ruck for captain Sio Tuia to score. Sio had taken over the reins with regular skipper Nick Passi out injured, as was fellow lock Matt Egan and hooker Ged Robinson.
Ahead 18-0 at halftime, MSP built on their lead three minutes into the second half with replacement prop Kiki Stowers powering over. Starting prop Solomona Sakalia was in the bin for a high tackle so it was a fine try for a seven-man forward pack.
Smart ball movement saw winger JP Tocker over in the corner 10 minutes later, and then a Chris Slade wrap-around put hard running winger George Cook in the clear for a 20-metre dash to the line. With MSP well on top, Fa'atonu tidied up some messy play with a casually taken drop goal, and Chris Slade bamboozled the defence to score the sixth and final try off a poor Upper Hutt clearing kick. He also nailed some excellent sideline conversions and a penalty to end up with 18 points for the afternoon.
Young locks Charlie Graham and Ben Nansett, in his first premier starting match, were awarded joint MSP players-of-the-day.

Bonus-point win over Johnsonville
The premiers secured maximum points with a 31-3 away win over Johnsonville on 5 June.
The win, their seventh in a row, puts MSP second on the Swindate Shield table which is a good comeback after three straight losses at the start of the season saw them second from bottom.
However, the premiers didn't have it all their own way against a spirited Johnsonville side on a good surface at Helston Park. MSP led 10-3 at halftime, with a try by premier debutant No 8 Tui Tuia making the difference.
It came from a good forward drive but the team was making too many errors against a solid Johnsonville defence.
With the wind at their backs in the second half, MSP went on to run in three more tries. Blindside flanker Liu Taituave scored off a lineout drive, and winger Paul Tuia, who was also on debut, picked up a loose ball and cut through for a good try.
Centre Chris Slade finished off a series of attacks in the final act of the match when the ball was moved smartly through the backs and he ran around to score untouched under the posts. He also kicked four conversions and a penalty for a personal tally of 16 points.

Dominant display of wet weather rugby against Tawa
The premiers put on a top display of wet weather rugby to score seven unanswered tries in a 48-0 win over Tawa on 29 May.
With the club's new All Black Victor Vito coming off the bench for the second half, MSP was never troubled against a Tawa team that tried to play adventurous rugby on a a sodden and bitterly cold Evans Bay Park.
MSP adapted far better to the southerly wind and rain that caused cancellations across Wellington rugby. Hooker Ged Robinson opened the scoring with a try after five minutes, and Wim Baars and Chris Slade added two more in the first half.
Chris added another in the second half, with Ryan Setefano, Joe Wright, and Nick Passi also scoring. Chris had a good day with the boot, adding a penalty and five conversions to his two tries for 23 points.
The team will take a lot of satisfaction from keeping the oppostion scoreless, a reflection of the constant pressure they applied for 80 minutes. Lock Charlie Graham was adjudged MSP's player of the day.
The senior 1s and senior 2s also had good wins.. see results.

A flock of Tuias
Some sort of club record might have been set when the MSP senior 1s played against Tawa on 29 May. In the side were four Tuia brothers - flankers Sio and Lucky, No 8 Tui, and wing Paul. Also in the team, on the other wing, was cousin Ben Tuituia.
Several years ago, a trio of Robinson brothers - Ged, Phil and Chris - were in the senior 1s front row, but the quartet of Tuias has set a new benchmark.

Best of luck, Mere
Best wishes to Mere Wilson, player-coach of the club's premier women's team, who has been selected to play in the Hurricanes Regional side on Queens Birthday Weekend.
The Hurricanes women will compete in a tournament against teams from the Blues, Chiefs, and South over four days from from 3-6 June. The tournament includes a trial for the Black Ferns team to contest the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
Mere, who plays lock, also has a big hand in organising MSP's social calendar. The club wishes her every success.

Well taken tries against Old Boys University
The premiers ran in six well-taken tries against Old Boys University to come out on top 33-11 at a sunny Basin Reserve on 22 May.
MSP dominated for most of the match, with some solid forward play giving the backs plenty of ball. Holes appeared regularly in the OBU defence, with wing John Paul Tocker and halfback Anthony Bradshaw benefitting with two tries each. Prop Jeff Allen and hooker Ged Robinson were the other try scorers.
Just before half time the game was stopped for an extended period for what looked like a serious injury to prop Johnathon Hopgood. Playing in his 80th premier match, he had hurt his neck in general play and lay prone on the ground while an ambulance was called. However, the injury was solely muscular and not as serious as first thought.
MSP scored three tries in each half and began the second spell 18-5 ahead. But after the high of last week's big game against Petone, the match was generally a quiet affair. The team will be happy to bank the points and look ahead to next week's game against Tawa.
Flanker Valentine Meachen and fullback George Cook both had strong games in their premier debuts. Hard running second-five Joe Wright was awarded MSP's player of the day.
In other results, the colts celebrated a last-minute win over competition leaders Petone, and the senior 2s also had a good win.

Jeff Allen off to World U20 tournament with club support
Jeff Allen, MSP's premier prop who has been selected in the NZ Under-20 team to contest the Junior World Cup, has left for the tournament in Argentina with a great show of club support.
At the Past Players and Supporters' Day on 15 May, buckets were passed around to raise funds to help Jeff on his way. Members and players contributed generously and, with the club matching the amount raised, Jeff departed with some handy Kiwi dollars in his backpocket.
The occasion was made all the more memorable by the fact that All Whites coach Ricki Herbert was at the clubrooms. Ricki, who knows a bit about World Cups himself, was invited to make the player-of-the-day presentations. As well as giving a well received impromptu speech, he also dipped into his own pocket to contribute generously to Jeff's fund

Well done Dave
Colts coach Dave Wanden has been awarded the club's 'Volunteer of the Month' for May in recognition of his great work in coaching the unbeaten colts side, which has involved a lot of off-season work and planning. Dave has also contributed many hours in other roles, such as taking on the job of assistant club captain. Well done, Dave. Dave Wanden
Win over Petone to celebrate Old Timers' Day
The premiers battled to a 16-10 win over Petone on 15 May in a tough and exciting contest that provided the perfect result for the big crowd of spectators who had gathered for Old Timer's Day.
The win completed a trifecta of victories over the old foe, with the senior 1s winning 57-8 and the senior 2s untroubled in their 81-3 result.
On a mild and still afternoon at Evans Bay, the premiers match was a classic in the tradition of past MSP v Petone clashes. The home side dominated the first half, attacking through backs and forwards, but some outstanding Petone defence limited MSP to one penalty in the first 30 minutes.
It took some individual brilliance from first-five Fa'atonu Fili and centre Chris Slade to finally crack the defence, with Fa'atonu stabbing the perfect cross field kick for Chris to leap high, pluck the ball from the air and dash 10 metres to score in the corner. A sideline conversion from Fa'atonu saw MSP ahead 10-3 at halftime.
Fifteen minutes in to the second half, Petone scored after some powerful forward drives. The conversion tied the scores at 10-10 and it began to look as though a disallowed MSP try in the first half might have proved very costly.
However, it was MSP applying the pressure, with Fa'atonu landing a penalty after hitting the posts a minute earlier. Captain Nick Passi had to leave the field with a broken nose as two willing forward packs battled for every inch of territory.
Fa'atonu hit the posts in another penalty attempt, but he had the final say when, with five minutes to go, he calmly potted a goal to the delight of the big home crowd.
Blindside flanker Liu Taituave was awarded MSP's player-of-the-day.

Ged Robinson celebrates 100th premier game
Premier and Wellington Lions hooker Ged Robinson celebrated his 100th premier game for Marist St Pats when he led the team out on to the field against Wainui on 8 May.
At a function later at the MSP clubrooms, teammate Anthony Bradshaw, who has played rugby with Ged since their days as schoolboys in Newlands, gave a colourful rundown on Ged's rugby history.
While Ants noted that Ged was "the first person to knock me out", he also acknowledged the hard work that Ged has put in to make the Lions and Hurricanes teams.

Great tries scored in win over Wainui
MSP scored some outstanding team tries in a classy 54-15 win over Wainui on 8 May to win the inaugural contest for the Rona-Morrisey Cup and to give hooker Ged Robinson a 100th premier match to remember.
At halftime, a big home crowd at Wainui had high hopes of an upset with MSP leading just 20-15 and turning to face a strong northerly. However, the second half was a complete shut-out with the premiers scoring 33 unanswered points.
Winger Marc Le had opened the scoring with a try, and prop Jeff Allen added another 30 minutes into the first half. Fa'atonu Fili added the conversions and two penalties for MSP's 20 points, but the young Wainui side also played with a lot of vigour in scoring two first-half tries.
In the second half, MSP added five more tries, with Marc Le getting three for the afternoon, and Chris Slade, Wim Baars, and Apoua Stewart also crossing the line. The team moved the ball superbly at times, with hard running and crisp passing from the backs captalising on some aggressive driving play from the forwards.
The teams contested a new trophy that recognises two players - Cliff Rona and John Morrissey - who have a long history with both clubs. The match was also the 100th premier appearance for hooker Ged Robinson, and he celebrated the occasion with a thoroughly deserved man-of-the-match performance.
In other results, the senior 1s and 2s and colts enjoyed good wins while the premier women had their first victory of the season.

MSP man edits new Wellington magazine
Former MSP player Ben Christie is editing a new magazine that should be of interest to many Wellingtonians.

Ben is the the son of former MSP chairman Terry Christie and the brother of MSP centurion Matt. He recently returned to the capital to edit FishHead, which runs a story in its first issue about Isaac Feaunati and his experience playing Jonah Lomu in the Clint Eastwood movie Invictus. Issue 2 features  a story on Ricki Herbert written by MSP deputy chairman Matt Buck.
The magazine covers the greater Wellington region including the Kapiti Coast and the Wairarapa. It has great photography and regular commentators on Politics (Duncan Garner), Food, Wine, Art, Theatre and Fitness.
FishHead gets its name from the Maori myth that the North Island is a fish that Maui pulled out of the sea, and the Wellington region is the head - see FishHead for more.

Dominant performance in win over Wests
A dominant performance against Wests on 1 May has seen MSP's premiers run out 44-5 winners to retain the Viv Haigh Memorial Trophy.
The team never looked like losing a match in which the backs scored all the points, with some excellent MSP tries the result of a fluent and well-organised team effort.
First-five Fa'atonu Fili scored the first of his 19 points after three minutes with a penalty on a chilly but calm Evans Bay Park. Then winger Julian Tupai opened the try scoring following a good break by opposite winger and man-of-the-match Marc Le, and 15 minutes later the backs combined brilliantly to put centre Chris Slade over next to the posts.
With flanker Tom Dawson winning a couple of key turnovers, quick hands and a Chris Slade break led to a Marc Le try. Fa'atonu added two conversions and another penalty so that MSP went into halftime 25-0 ahead.
In the second half, Fa'atonu sliced through for a try, while fullback Apoua Stewart helped himself to a pair, again following good combinations by backs and forwards. The game lost its shape in the last 15 minutes, and MSP eased up to let the opposition in for a soft try.
However, MSP was far too well organised for Wests with many signs that the red machine is finally hitting top gear.
In other results, the senior 1s and colts had good wins while the under-85 Blues came out on top against fierce rivals Poneke.
