Marist St Pats Hieke - Māramatanga of the jersey

A Hieke is a protective cape and like a korowai brings prestige and honour to those who have the privilege to wear it.

In November we shared plans for enhancement to our playing jerseys. This included subliminated Maori and Pasifika designs over the chest and shoulder plate, acknowledging the huge contribution of Maori and Pacific club members and giving our players a unique addition to our jersey they wear with pride.

Norm Broughton (Ngāti Ruanui, Nga Rauru, Atihaunui a Paparangi - Past Player) has been leading this initiative and has worked with Mere Wilson (Ngāti Rangi, Past player, coach and committee member) and designer Paora Peipi (Ngaariki Kaiputahi, Ngati Porou, Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki, Tuhoe) to create a design that is unique to Marist St Pats and embraces our past, present and future.

We are excited to share this design with our community.

The overall kaupapa for this design is based on whakawhanaungatanga, and the connection shared between everyone in the club from past players to the staff, coaches, families and the wider Marist St Pats whānau and community.

No matter where we come from or our ethnic background, this design reflects our collective journey to the club, through rugby and religion. Each design element binds all of us together and reflects a sense of belonging to the club - we are whānau.

Through our traditional colours and our crest we acknowledge the union of two long standing successful clubs and their ties to the Catholic Church referenced by the holy trinity and of course the Celtic heritage that runs deep in the club. We also pay homage to our ancestors and our community of today with the designs that portray whānau values and whakapapa that strengthen us for our journey in to the future and on the battlefields.

These same sentiments remind us that we have a responsibility to have a positive impact on everyone we come in to contact with including our opposition. We need to uphold the mana (integrity) and wairua (spiritual sense) of the jersey and the club on and off the field.

This is best described through the concept of Manaakitanga – expressions of aroha, hospitality and mutual respect toward each other. You can’t have one without the other. We do this for ourselves, our whānau and our future.

“We all have an enhanced responsibility to respect and protect the mana and wairua of our jersey and all it represents. This isn't just a jersey, this is a representation of all that has been and all those to come."

Our enhanced jersey design is being brought to life by our jersey supplier SAS and is expected to be worn by teams in 2022.
