Sean Horan appointed Director of Rugby

Marist St Pats is thrilled to announce former Black Ferns Sevens coach Sean Horan as the Club's new Director of Rugby.

Sean will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club with an extensive professional coaching resume that also includes a successful stint as the Bay of Plenty NPC head coach and more recently as the head coach of China’s Olympic Women’s Sevens programme. In his five year stint as the Black Ferns Sevens coach Sean led the team to three out of the first four World Sevens Series titles and won the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow in 2013; the side also won the Olympic silver medal in Rio in 2016.

Along with his coaching credentials, Sean is a proud Marist St Pats man. As a player he was a Marist St Pats Premier Men’s captain and Jubilee Cup champion.

As the Club’s Director of Rugby, Sean will be tasked with developing the rugby strategy and a blueprint for ongoing success for the club alongside the recruitment, development of leadership of players, coaches, managers, and other volunteers. Sean’s extensive experience in both the Men’s and Women’s game will benefit all involved in rugby at Marist St Pats.

Sean will start the transition to his new role from October 2023 and is excited to work with the exciting talent developing at the club:

‘It’s a great honour and privilege to take on the Director of Rugby role for Marist St Pats. MSP holds a close affiliation to me and my family. This is more than just a job for me, it’s a way of life for what this club has given me and what rugby has given me.

This is an opportunity to give back something to a club that helped forge my life. Both my father and uncle are life members; my brother and cousins have played for the club, won premierships and have given a lot. I even met my wife outside the Marist St Pats gym back in 2000!

The club is built on a strong history of a belonging, success, community and amazing people. I want to play my part to help bring back the success.’

Sean will be working with the management committee over the coming weeks to appoint coaches for next season and we look forward to sharing those appointments when made.
