No. 4, September 2020
Dear
In most years by September club rugby would be wrapping up; by this time last year we had already held prizegiving! But as we know, 2020 has been anything but normal and on the rugby fields of Wellington things are really heating up. With 12 of 13 Swindale Shield rounds now in the books, our Premiers are sitting in pole position with one week to play...
There is nothing better than a rugby competition being decided on the final round - and that is exactly what we have on our hands in the 13th and final round of the 2020 edition of the Swindale Shield. Holding first place on the table by one competition point, our Premiers are in full control on whether they will lift the Shield for the first time since 2014. They play the Wellington Axemen at Evans Bay Park on Saturday.
While no spectators are allowed at the ground due to Covid-19 restrictions, you can watch the game live on Facebook. This is everything you need to know about the Swindale Shield action this weekend... >>>
Our Under 85s, the 'Reds', reversed a 0-17 half time deficit to beat Poneke by 34-31 in their semi final last weekend. They will take on the Wellington Axemen in the Tony O'Brien Shield final this Saturday...
>>>
After Covid-19 disrupted our plans to celebrate our 50th Jubilee in 2020, new dates have been set to mark the occasion over Queens Birthday weekend in 2021... >>>
New Wellington Lions coach Leo Crowley has named four Marist St Pats players in his 36-strong Mitre10 Cup squad, including Aidan Morgan and Tyrone Thompson who will join the squad for the first time... >>>
Four Marist St Pats players have been named in coach Ross Bond's Wellington Pride squad for the upcoming Farah Palmer Cup. Loose forward Marcelle Parkes is joined by backs Ana Afuie, Monica Tagoai and Lyric Faleafaga... >>>
Around the traps:
Our Netball team enjoyed a successful first season with an unbeaten run up to their grade final, unfortunately they fell by three points in the final to an experienced side but the future looks bright for netball at Marist St Pats... With Covid-19 Level 2 restrictions, spectators have been asked to stay away from rugby fields to limit capacity to 100 people. Thanks to JP Tocker and Michael Holden our supporters have been able to keep up with the action by watching a live broadcast of home games on our Facebook page; check it out this weekend... Our Premier Reserves will be getting itchy feet after winning by default for two weeks in a row; they're scheduled to play Petone's second Premier Reserve side this weekend... The Evans Bay faithful have regularly witnessed the big hits of James Tuiatua from the sidelines. The rest of the country was introduced to him when he featured on The Crowd Goes Wild's popular 'Smashed 'Em Bro!' feature recently, watch it here... Tim Donoghue's new book C'mon Red! has been selling like hotcakes and was featured in the September edition of Welcom...
