Patrick O'Connor - Jubilee Cup and Heavyweight champ

Patrick John O’Connor played for the undefeated 1950 Wellington Marist Senior A Jubilee-Cup winning team. Pat’s nephew, John O’Connor-Whyte, travelling from Melbourne, and family members Kelly Fyfe, Karl Fyfe and Brenda Collins (nee O’Connor) recently visited the Hataitai Clubrooms to meet the Clubs President, John Holden, and to view the Club's archives.

Patrick O’Connor was New Zealand heavy weight wrestling champion and after the 1950 season traveled to the USA to follow a successful wrestling career.

C’mon Red, the Clubs 50th Jubilee book of the celebration of Marist Rugby has a photo of the 1950 Marist Senior A team that were unbeaten winners of the Jubilee Cup. Patrick O’Connor was absent for the photo as he was at the Auckland Empire Games winning a silver medal in the Wrestling (freestyle) Heavyweight division.

Pictured is Club President, John Holden, with John O’Connor-Whyte presenting to Marist St Pats a historic citation of Patrick O’Connor’s life for inclusion in the Club's Trophy cabinet and the Club's archives.

(Should any Club members have a copy of the 1950 Annual Report the Club would be pleased to receive this).
