Men fall in Cup quarter final at Marist 7s

The 19th annual edition of the New Zealand Marist 7s tournament was a great success over Waitangi Day weekend with a number of teams and supporters enjoying quality rugby across the two fields at Wakefield Park.

Our Men's team started the tournament well on Friday with a narrow 14-12 win over Greerton backed up by a stronger performance against Hastings winning 24-21. Loose forwards Isaac O'Connor, Caleb Hilbron (below) and Matt Peni all showed touches of class with the latter two each scoring tries; Andrew Wells was also effective at breaking the line. Hilbron was named in the tournament team to travel to Samoa later this month.

Saturday started with high hopes with a quarter final against Napier early in the day's play. However after a strong start with an MSP try scored in the first minute, the Napier side came back strongly to outscore our men 19-10. Napier went on to lose their semi final by one point to eventual runners-up Hutt Old Boys Marist.

Marist St Pats congratulates North Harbour Marist who beat HOBM 31-14 to take the title!

Women's team fly the flag proudly

A highlight of the weekend was seeing a youthful Marist St Pats team entered in the women's draw which was played on the Saturday.

Largely made up of college students the team played with great spirits and impressed a number of MSP management with a strong win over Hutt Old Boys Marist.

We look forward to seeing the resurgence of women's rugby at Marist St Pats in 2015!
