Looking ahead with Regan Sword

Regan Sword is the kind of guy that is always looking for an opportunity to learn and develop his game. After a debut Premier season out of Hato Paora College that saw him start in the 2016 Jubilee Cup Final, he relishes every chance to get on the field and take his game to the next level.

'It was a huge step-up to go from 1st XV level, straight into club rugby down in Wellington. The physicality, structure and culture of club rugby is different to 1st XV. But I quickly began to enjoy the club scene because of the atmosphere from club supporters and the fierce competition from all clubs to win each week.'

After making that immediate step up, Regan was preparing over the summer to build on that experience and his skillset in 2017. Unfortunately a shoulder injury put him on the sidelines in week two and he was unable to return for another 10 weeks.

'The season feels a lot longer when watching the games on the side-line. The shoulder is feeling much better, thanks to the physios watching out for me and it feels great to be playing again after a month on hold.'

Fortunately the injury hasn't held Regan out of representative contention with his form over the past few years seeing him named in the Wellington Under 19 squad, along with fellow Marist St Pats team mates Billy Proctor, Grayson Whitman and Meinrad Fitisemanu. Regan hopes to play a big part in the success of that side.

'The main goal is to travel up to Taupo for the tournament and to bring back the trophy with the team, that would be an awesome achievement. The next goal is to be in contention to selections for the first New Zealand Under 20’s camp later this year.'

Along with these big goals on the field Regan is working hard off the field as he works towards his Bachelor of Science degree at Victoria University. When asked if he has plans for the summer when the representative season finishes, he just hopes to get some down time before getting back to work on achieving his big rugby and academic goals for 2018.
