Nailbiting wins over Wainui

Our Premier and Premier Reserve sides have guts out close wins over Wainuiomata this weekend. Played in glorious sunshine at Evans Bay both results were close but in contrasting matches.

Our Premiers earned a bonus point victory coming out on top by 42-40. The side had found themselves down by 10 points after five minutes, but sustained attack resulted in two outstanding tries to winger Takahira Yuki to take the home side back in front. But Wainui kept coming and ended up with a 20-24 advantage at the break for oranges.

The Red Machine came out of the break with real intent, in his 100th game Isaac O'Connor was outstanding all over the park and was rewarded with a try very soon after the break. Classy midfielder Billy Proctor then scored two tries and it looked like we had taken control of the game. To their credit Wainui refused to rollover and closed the gap to seven points. They had the Evans Bay faithful on tenderhooks after scoring a try in the dying minutes only for the touchline conversion attempt to sail wide.

In the early game, played on the artificial turf, our Premier Reserves trailed for much of the game in what was an arm wrestle with their Wainui counterparts. A try in the final two minutes to loose forward Dion Gilbert had the team trailing by one, but Lawrence Lotovale calmly slotted the conversion to take the game by one point.

Both sides now sit fourth on their respective competition tables.
