Over 100 travel to Spillane Cup

The 86th edition of the annual New Zealand Marist preseason tournament, the Spillane Cup, was held in Palmerston North this weekend and Marist St Pats descended on the student city en masse.

Over 100 players and management traveled north as our teams looked for some valuable preseason game time.

In rainy conditions Saturday's play garnered mixed results for our teams with our Colts and Women both falling to Auckland Marist. However our Senior team beat local rivals Hutt Old Boys Marist by 27-22 and booked a spot in the final against Napier Old Boys Marist.

Sunday brought another rainy day and a stiff challenge against the Hawkes Bay club champions. Unfortunately it wasn't our day and we ultimately fell 3-22. Congratulations to NOBM on a great tournament capping off a great 12 months for them!

While the results on the field didn't go our way, the Spillane weekend again proved to be valuable in testing combinations on the field and team bonding off it. It was great to see so many players have the opportunity to get away together and enjoy the weekend with teams across grades.

Jay Cameron, Ryan Saunders and Ha'amea Ahio were named in the tournament team.

Preseason is now in the books for our Premier and Premier Reserve teams as the real season starts in earnest next weekend against Tawa in the Swindale Shield and Harper Lock Shield.
